Sausages and Eyes
The building we occupy has a fascinating history. It was first home to a stationery shop in the early 1900s and, from 1934 to 1993, to the family business Kennedys.
Kennedys was a well-known chain of independent shops across South London, renowned for its quality cold meats, sausages and pies. As supermarkets became increasingly popular, the shops gradually closed and the Crystal Palace premises became an opticians in 1993.
More than 30 years later, the building is still serving the local community, although these days it is eye examinations rather than sausages and pies that bring people through the door.

opticians since 2007
Crystal Eye Centre has been jointly owned by Anand and Lucy since 2007. They fell in love with the history and character of the building and have worked hard to retain as many of its original features as possible.
Many features within the shop date back to the early 1900s, including the distinctive double wooden entrance doors, beautiful Edwardian green wall tiles, suspended ceiling, character woodwork and the original marble butcher’s slab, which still bears visible knife marks.
Many of our patients have been visiting the practice since they were children. Over the years, the building has gone from serving pasties and pies across its counters to providing modern eye care using advanced technology including OCT scanning and OPTOMAP retinal imaging.
